Hawaii - alternative accomodations

Question
Hello. I am planning a trip to HI. Not to sure which area yet, but I am looking to stay in some sort of hut-type place on the beach, instead of a hotel. Is there anything you can think of that might be kind of what i am looking for? All the travel sites give me lists and lists of hotels and expensive resorts.  I went on alternative-hawaii.com and they had the right idea, but i didnt really find anything ideal. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Angie,

It sounds like you are looking for a rustic cabana type accommodation. I am afraid that doesn't exist in Hawaii. There are some high end hotels that offer plush thatched roof accommodations on the beach, namely Kona Village Resort on the Big Island. I know of two places on Maui that are small establishments that have units on the beach: mama's fish house (expensive)  and Andy's Cove (less expensive but not budget).
You can also look for vacation rental houses on the beach, but they are usually very luxurious, not the hut type you mention above.

If you have a good chunk of change, I would recommend the Kona Village Resort on the Big Island.  It is the closest you are going to get to a hut type accommodation right on the beach, and there a tons of honu (sea turtles) that hang out on this beach. The price includes your meals, which are made from fresh ingredients. Check out their website.

If you choose to book, do so through a broker such as classic custom vacations so they can get you a deal with airfare etc.

Aloha!
