Subject: Fullness in the head

Question
Dear Dr,
I have been having a CONSTANT feeling of fullness in my head (behind my nose of palate) and my ears for about two months as well as some neck pain. I had a brain/head MRI and was normal. I was told it was an allergy but the medication does not seem to help. I had an orthodontic treatment. I have noticed that when I wear the retainers the pressure or feeling of fullness in my head improves. I also have had long dental procedures for two crowns, including root canals for two teeth, with students at a university, so I have had to have my mouth wide open for long periods of time.Could this feeling of fullness in my head be a TMJ related problem?
Thanks

Cielo
Thank you,

Answer
Cielo,

Yes, fullness can sometimes be related to a TMJ problem.  This is related to muscle cramps in the jaw muscles, that can also contribute to headaches.  I suggest you see a dentist with advanced training in TMJ disorders.  There are other causes of fullness that must also be ruled out.  These include ear/ sinus problems and migraine.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Steve
