Headaches/Migraines - Daily persistent headaches/12 YO Female
Expert: Dr. Tron Malachowski - 11/2/2009
Question My healthy, active, athletic child became ill in February with cold like symptoms - headache, fever and sore throat. Took to her ped on second day and was diagnosed as a "bug". When she didn't get better, she was further evaluated and diagnosed as having had EBV. Life has been a nightmare since that morning on Feb. 3 2009 when she told me she didn't feel well. She no longer participates in any sports or other after school activities. She missed 40 days school last school year and is missing school weekly this year. We are under the care of a neurologist who has hospitalized her 2x and gave DHE-45. Prior to hospitalization she was given typical meds - toradol, topamax, midrin, and otc without relief. Her headaches went from 10+ to 2-3 after first DHE-45 but began increasing after school started in August 2009. A second DHE-45 hospitalization three weeks ago gave no relief. She also was injected with botox in the head with no relief. We repeated MRI, MRV and lumbar puncture - all normal. 2 weeks prior to this she was given IV Haldol with no result. She has been on amitryplin since June 2009 but was taken off three weeks ago because of the side effects - she was moody and withdrawn. She was released with a Rx for Depakote and Lexapro---we refused to givei her Lexapro and after 2 weeks of depakote asked the Dr. to allow her to come off for a while to see what happened. Her headaches were still a 4-5 with this drug. She has been off the drug for about 5-6 days and her headaches are 5-6. She is fatigued and never feels well. I was reading your remark to a patient who started her headaches at 12 and at 25 still suffers daily. You asked her to respond with any info about an early traumatic event in her life. Lauren was adopted from China (one of the sad stories of children being abandoned as infants). She was about 5 months old when we got her. We have a very open and loving relationship and she knows all about her adoption. My husband and his family are Chinese so she has the benefit of a Chinese surname and heritage....is this an issue ?? Also, how do you feel about Lexapro? We really don't want to put her on these heavy meds. We have initiated chiropractic treatment and are considering accupuncture.
Answer Debra,
You would not believe how many people have this same type of story. I see people like your daughter everyday in my office with these very same problems. And those problems go away after beginning care.
Unfortunately, medicine's only answer to your daughters' problems is drugs and surgery. And I applaud you for searching for other options.
Yes, all of the people that have these problems have had a major stress or trauma in their life. It can physical like a car accident, chemical like a vaccine or being exposed to something, or an emotional trauma like not being care for properly or a death in the family, etc. These stresses negatively impact the body and have negatively impacted your daughter's nerve system.
These stress cause pressure in the nerve system and will create her problems. You may not know this but their are few Chiropractors that can properly care for this issue. They are called Specific Chiropractors. If you would like, let me know what part of the country you live in and I will send you exactly where you need to go.
IN Health,
Dr. T
