Headaches/Migraines - headache

Expert: Steven C. Scherr, D.D.S. - 4/15/2009

Question
I've been getting these mild headaches.  I also feel a pulse on my soft spots on the sides of my head.  I don't know what is causing this.  Can you help?

Answer
Alexandra,

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing headaches.  There are many different kinds of headache.  Head pain can be caused by jaw/neck muscle cramps (tension headache), sinus/nasal congestion, jaw joint damage (TMJ Dysfunction), neurovascular problems (migraine), nerve problems (neuralgia), sleep disorders (sleep apnea), blood vessel inflammation (arteritis), or rarely tumors.  It is important to determine the type of headache present before a solution can be determined.

Tension headache is the most common mild headache.  However, feeling a pulse can be either normal or associated with vascular headaches, depending on age and location of the pulse.

Should the headaches persist, it is best to see a doctor.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Steve
