Expert: B. Todd Troost, MD Date: 10/15/2003 Subject: allergic drug reaction to Bactrim and Depakote
Question I have daily headaches and thought about trying Zonegran as a preventative. I've read that Zonegran is classified as a sulfonamide. I've experienced allergic reations to Bactrim resulting in a rash. I am also allergic to Depakote.
Does this mean I should stay away from the all sulfonamide drugs?
Answer Dear Christine:
It is my understanding that some of the anticonvulsants used for migraine such as Topamax and Zonegran have the sulfer part buried deep in the molecule and therefor usual sulfer allergies are not a problem.
You need to check with your pharmacist also for the latest info on Zonegran and sulfer and I will try and find out additional information also, so please write back in about a week and I'll tell you my informaiton update.
