Headhunters & Employment Agencies - Shall I send resume even if there's no job posting?

Expert: Ed Freeman - 10/7/2009

Question
Hello Ed,
My friend told me I should send my resume to big companies even if they are not hiring. The recruiters like piling up resumes, and when there is one job opening, they will scan the resume they previously received.
But I don't think it's true. If I'm a recruiter, I won't save resumes, because... who knows, if there is an opening three months later, the previous job seekers may already found their job. So I won't bother going back to earlier resumes.
What do you think?

Best Regards,

Linda

Answer
Linda-

Thanks for your question.

Looking for a job is a numbers game - the more companies that see your resume the more likely
it is that one is going to have a need for someone just like you.

Also, you might want to explore the local job boards in your area for jobs in your field.
Most job boards also let you post your resume.

Again, the more people who know you are looking and what you do the better.

Good luck!
