Headhunters & Employment Agencies - Fish out of water (Admin new to Atlanta)

Expert: Ed Freeman - 7/14/2005

Question
I relocated to the Atlanta, Georgia area (McDonough) July 2004 from New York. I relocated because I wanted to buy a house, but I had a hard time finding a job even though I have about 12 years of experience. Recruiters seem to have a problem with the distance of my home. It took me three months to land a permanent job as a sales assistant through an agency for a manufacturing plant, with a $15,000 pay cut. I know that there are good paying jobs out there, that more appropriately match my background (Executive Administrative Assistant), but I keep hitting a brick wall. I have found that the agencies in Georgia are a bit flaky and unreliable. In New York I had a lot of success with agencies enabling me to get my foot into the front door at a few Fortune 500 companies, but in Atlanta that doesn't seem to be the case. Can you please advise me on how to maneuver in a market that I obviously don't understand?

Answer
Joanne-

Thanks for your question.

Atlanta has good agencies and bad agencies just like anywhere else.  The problem may be one of focus - you state that your experience is as an Executive Assistant, but your last position
was Sales Assistant?  You might want to start fresh with a couple of agencies in your area which specialize in placing admin professionals and actually talk to them in person about your concerns.

Good luck!
