Headhunters & Employment Agencies - Long time Employee - time for a change?

Expert: Ed Freeman - 9/9/2004

Question
Hi Mr. Freeman -

I have been with my current company for over 15 years and have pretty much gone as far as I can unless several people leave or retire. I have a cross section of skills and may want to look at other employment options, not necessarily in our industry. Where do you suggest as being the best place to start when doing research on assessing my current skills and talents and developing a plan to move forward in a job search? I want to have a realistic view of what I can offer and how much I can seek as compensation and benefits from a new company. After all this time, I am a bit rusty on job searches and interviews from the other side of the table.

Do you think it is always best to work with a recruiter or placement agency? What realistically can I expect as services provided?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Kath

Answer
Kath-

Thanks for your questions.

To answer your last question first - you need to settle on a direction before working with a recruiter.  Recruiters normally have a specialty(mine is accounting) and those changing careers don't typically get the help and attention as those who are focused and have a direction.

Check out the resources on my site at http://employmentatlanta.com/#resume

there are links for resume' help and interview guidelines.

It sounds like your first step is deciding what you want to do.  There are also links to some career coaches at

Good luck!
