Question I am currently a Certified Medical Assistant with an Assoc of Science degree for 5 years. I was wanting to go back to school for Health care Administration. Do you think I would be wasting my time or with the exp that I have in the medical field as being a med assistnat would this benefit me? What would be your advice b/c I really want to go back to school. When I first started in the health care field I was enrolled in the Health care Admin course but after a few months I dropped the class and enrolled into the Medical Asst program which took 2 years to complete. Please let me know what your suggestion would be. Thank you!
Answer You chose to become a clinician. Do you enjoy being a medical assistant? That is the big question. If you enjoy the clinical side of medicine, you may wish to return to school to become a nurse or therapy assistant. If you really enjoy and do well in science, you may wish to pursue a pre-med, pre-PT, pre-OT, or pre-SLP undergraduate program with the goal of going to medical school or therapy school. Becoming a healthcare administrator requires a focus in business administration. You really need to truly enjoy studying business and management. If you feel that is the direction you wish to go, I would suggest that you pursue a degree in healthcare administration.
