Health Plan Administration - Insurance codes for hairloss

Expert: Linda Woolsteen - 7/15/2008

Question
Hi Linda I have a hairloss center I help clients get hair prosthesis can you help me get the codes for Alopecia,Chemotherapy lupis, burns and all other hairloss codes. Thank you Gloria gigiaah@yahoo.com

Answer
Hi,

You probably want a coder for that.  Usually, wigs, alopecia, hair loss are non-covered by most policies.  Even when you bill, if it is questionable, they may ask for office notes to see if the notes support the billing information.  If the person really wants to make sure it is covered first.. I would have them bring in their Certificate of Insurance so you can specifically read their benefits.  Even the CSR's at Insurance Companies sometimes get the benefits incorrect.  There is always going to be a list of non-covered items.  Just look under it.  A lot of states now have State Mandates for Cancer and like Breast Prosthetics are usually covered now.  Usually, only things that are a medical necessity are covered by insurance.  Hair is not medically necessary.  But, then again, sometimes for the burns, chemotherapy if you are coding with that as the diagnosis, they may consider.  You can always send in a Predetermination first as well.  Always, note on it that it is a Predetermination in big letters, maybe even highlight.  Always, include the policy #, usually the policyholder's SS#, which they call ID numbers a lot of times.    Sorry, I couldn't give you specific codes to use.  But, I hope something may be of help.
