Question
My husband and I are expecting a new baby. I personally have been searching for a better insurance provider but have been turned down by each company due to being pregnant. I have not been seen and have just found this out last week. However they continue to deny even a quote or to speak with me. Is this legal?

Answer
Hi,

Gosh, I have never seen an applicant be turned down for coverage due to pregnancy, at least the places I have worked before.  But, every Insurance Company can have different guidelines.  If you ask for a "sample" certificate of insurance, they should give you the exact policy you would be issued, it will be stamped as a sample and you could review their Eligibility Guidelines to see yourself if it states you are not eligible if you are pregnant.

Eligibility and Pre-Existing are two seperate items.  Pre-Existing conditions are usually handled with a Certificate of Creditable Coverage (CCC's).  Sometimes, Individual policies will not accept a CCC to help with a Pre-Existing condition.  Iam not sure what state you are in but you could always email your State Department of Insurance and see what they say.

So, usually, if you applied & got the policy, it use to be they would count back once you delivered to see if you were pregnant and then see if that time period fell within the Pre-Existing time period on the policy or after it.  If it was within it, they could deny the claims as Pre-existing but now with the CCC's that usually helps.

Sorry, I could not be specific but I hope something I have written may be of some help to you.
