Question
Hi Linda,
My 70 year old Dad is visiting from Africa. He has some medical problems but no insurance. The only plans I found will not cover preexisting conditions.
What can I do? He will be around for 3 weeks.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi, your just looking for health insurance for the 3 weeks that he is here?  Or for him to apply while he is here and get it whenever he can?

It would take him longer than 3 weeks just to get approved somewhere.

Not sure if he is eligible for any plans if he is not from or living in USA... that information would be under the "Eligibility" section of the plan information.

Anyways, Nowadays all you can do with Pre-existing conditions is if you have a "Certificate of Creditable Coverage" you get that from the previous insurance company you were with.. that is to help with PE conditions.

Otherwise, Insurance companies have to have an open enrollement I believe each year.  The open enrollement is advertised in your newspapers.  During the open enrollement they have to accept people, regardless of their health conditions... however, they also usually have a hefty premium to pay and most the time the premium is not acceptable to those that need insurance.

I do not know of any government help for those that are not US citizens, (if he is not)  so I cannot help you with that at all.

Health insurance is for future risks and that is why you get it and pay for it for the future.  Unfortanetly, it doesn't work like most people want it.. to buy it when they need it.

Not sure if I answered your questions.  Let me know if you have any more that I can help you with.

Linda
