Question
QUESTION: i was wondering if they can tell if you have heart valve problem with ekg and with a ultrasound of your heart? thank you

ANSWER: Dear Chris,

Echo is best for valves.  It shows the structure and function of each of the 4 valves in great detail.  EKG may lead a doctor to suspect valve trouble, but is not definitive.

Please write back if this note doesn't answer all your questions.

QUESTION: my echo came back perfect i am just trying to figure out a cause of my afib my cardio told me despite the a-fib my heart was perfect thank you for your time

Answer
Chris, some afib runs in families that have one or more base pairs in their genes altered, a misplaced base pair.  Older age, enlargement of the atria by valve disease and gender play a role.  Males have afib more often than females.  Age by increasing the fibrous tissue in the atria.  Cooling of the left atrium by swallowing ice cream or other cold substances can cause afib.  Other than those, the causes of afib are unknown.
