Heart & Cardiology - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Expert: Frank J. Pearl, M.D. - 10/21/2009

Question
Dr. Pearl,

For a while now I have been able to notice a pulse in my abdomen. If I palpate the abdomen, I can feel a regular pulse and if I just watch it, I can see it rise and fall with every heartbeat. I have done some research on AAA's and was wondering if this could be the case.  I am 22 years old, my BP is slightly high in the 130-135/75-85 range, with a pulse in the range of 55-65. Are AAA's common for someone of this age and can anything else cause a pulse in the abdomen?

Thank you

Answer
It is not abnormal to feel a pulse in the abdomen particularly if you are thin. An aneurysm is not something I would think of in a 22 year old. The next time you see your doctor have it checked. Good luck!!!
