Heart & Cardiology - low pressure left arm

Expert: Frank J. Pearl, M.D. - 10/29/2009

Question
I checked my blood pressure at home in the evening on my left arm and it was 96/48.  I was scared and took it on my right arm, which was 112/76 normal for me.  I later rechecked my left arm and it was also about 117/68.  I had a professional at work check my pressure this morning and it was 92/70 in my left arm and 112/65 in the right.  Is this something I need to worry about?  I recently started thyroid medication but I didn't know if that would effect my blood pressure.  I don't feel lightheaded or have any symptoms, and my heart rate is normal and in the 70's.
Thank you.

Answer
Blood pressure can vary from the time it takes to measure it in one arm until you measure it in the other. Go back and forth several times. If there is truly a significant difference you should have a formal cardiovascular evaluation. Good luck!!!
