Heart & Cardiology - Energy levels and heart rate?

Expert: David Richardson - 11/4/2009

Question
I'm a 21 year old male, just shy of 6' tall and I weigh 180lbs. About 3 years ago I weighed 280lbs, and had been pretty large my entire life prior. I've maintained 160-180lbs for the last year and a half. I've always been told I have lower than normal blood pressure. My job keeps me very active. Constantly moving and lifting. My resting heart rate seems to average around 55 beats per minute. Would having a lower than average heart rate and blood pressure cause you to feel a lack of energy? I've not checked my beats per minute while working, but I've felt my pulse and it just feels low and weak. For example, after a series of heavy lifting over a period of 10 to 15 minutes, I don't notice my pulse picking up as I think it should. I check my pulse, because I feel weak as I lift, even though physically I feel little fatigue.

Answer
Dear Scott,

Low heart rate is very good, promises long life, and would not deprive you of energy.  Low BP might cause lack of energy.

Are you sleeping well?  Are you sleepy in the daytime, at work?  Sleep apnea (not breathing at times during sleep) can cause lack of energy.

Please write back if this note doesn't answer all your questions.
