Expert: David Richardson - 11/5/2009

Question
Dear doctor,
3 months before, My heart started beating fast, I went to the doctor and I had taken ECG, Holter and stress test, Throid was also done, Everything came normal.
but my heart beats fast, I can feel the beating of my heart. there is a pain in my left shoulder as well. Please help me.

Answer
Dear Jafar Ansari,

Need more information.  How fast?  Does it speed up and slow down abruptly, in one heart beat, or gradually over several minutes?  How old are you?

The most common cause of pain in a young person is cramping of the muscles in the chest wall.  If you can modify the pain, make it better or worse, by pressing on the area that hurts, then you have proven that the pain is coming from your chest wall.  Chest wall pain is a nuisance but no threat to life or health.  At age below 45, chest pain is very unlikely to come from clogging of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart.
