Heart & Cardiology - pounding heart and feeling of breath loss

Expert: David Richardson - 11/1/2009

Question
I'm 50 years old good health active  male, family history father congestive heart past@ 73 years.  I take a generic form of Ziac.  My question, recently I have felt like my heart is beating unusually hard accompanied by a split second of breath loss. could this be do to an increase in dosage of Ziac which also happened about the same time ago (two months go) or coinsidence and is this anything to worry about. Thank you in advance Ed.

Answer
Dear Edward,

How fast does it beat when you feel it beating unusually hard?  How long does the hard beating last?  If only one hard beat, that's okay and no worry.  I doubt if there's serious worry even if it beats hard for a longer time.  The only way to tell about Ziac is stop it for 4-5 days and then restart it.  If that seems to be the cause of the hard heart beat, it would be sensible to repeat the stop and restart at least once more, to be sure.

Please write back if this note doesn't answer all your questions.
