Heart & Cardiology - Event Monitor results

Expert: David Richardson - 7/10/2009

Question
I had a recent event monitor done for palpitations.  The following were the results..my cardio doc says nothing to worry about, that i am not going to have anything life-threatening from it.

There were 8 episodes of sinus rhythm or sinus tachycardia with heart rate of 65-130bpm.  2 episodes of PVC's.  One with normal sinus tachycardia with rate of 75-101 and a brief episode of bigeminy lasting approximately 5 beats.
Additionally one tracing showed sinus tachycardia with a rate of 110-115 with isolated monomorphic PVCs.  No tachyarryhthmias, brachyarrhythmias , or pauses greater than 2 seconds.

I had a echo last year which showed mild MVP with very mild leakage and all other heart function and structure normal.

What is a isolated monomorphic pvc?  is bigeminy dangerous?  Can either of these lead to anything life-threatening?  Do you agree with my Cardiologist that I shouldn't worry about these things?  they are very scary when they happen.  Can bigeminy be caused by anxiety?  Can hormonal fluctuations cause PVCs?
Thank you
Gina Murray

Answer
Dear Gina,

Isolated monomorphic PVCs mean one at a time and all have the same shape.
Bigeminy is not dangerous in someone with normal ventricular structure and function.
Yes I agree that you need not worry.
Anxiety makes PVCs and bigeminy more frequent.  I don't know about hormonal fluctuations.

Please write back if this note doesn't answer all your questions.
