Heart & Cardiology/AFib from binge drinking, aka "holiday heart syndrome"

Question
Hi Dr. Tort,

I am 39.  From ages 21 til about 6 months ago I would binge drink every single Saturday night (8 drinks typically).

Sometimes I would wake up halfway through sleep & my heart would be beating fast & poundy (probably not 150 bpm but maybe 120??..forgot exactly, it's been awhile). I always thought it was mild dehydration (despite the fact that I was very routine about drinking lots of water).

If what I was experiencing was AFib, could this have:

(1) caused permanent damage to my heart

(2) put me at greater risk for stroke or heart problems (from this day forward)?

Thanks,
James

Answer
Hi James,
1& 2: potentially, but it is unlikely to be AF:
