Heart & Cardiology/Left atrial appendage

Question
Hello: I was wondering if the left atrial appendage size varies from person to person, and if there is a test to determine this? A close friend,a fellow in his 60s, has idiopathic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and this came up in our conversation.
Thanks

Answer
Hello Michael,

Yes the left atrial appendage can vary in size and shape.  Echocardiography can determine its size and shape, but its size and shape are not very important.  What's important is whether the left atrial appendage contains clots, also determined by echo.
