Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - 2 ton unit by fedders

Expert: J Cook - 12/13/2008

Question
i just purchased a 2 ton unit by fedders, my friend told me that fedders is junk compared to trane and lennox. please let me know if fedders is a reliable unit or not. thank you, donald

Answer
Every manufacturer goes through some sort of changes. Trane was purchased some years ago by American Standard, so purchasing a Trane is actually purchasing an American Standard. The good part is they are a reliable unit and Trane continues to be a good unit, although the price is somewhat prohibitive in my opinion. I would not have a Lennox if given to me, so I am not sure the business your friend is in, but I have been an HVAC contractor for over 25 years and speak strictly from experience with different brands. Another dog in my opinion is a York. Fedders at one time was the market leader in the small self contained A/C units and you could easily expect one to last 20+ years. I do not have any experience with the larger central units so I can not offer an objective opinion. I replaced both of my aging Carrier units with Goodman units. We began 13+ years ago experimenting with Goodman because they had a 10 year compressor warranty and were about 1/2 the cost of a large " Name Brand " unit. Every one we installed 13 years ago is still in operation and no parts have been replaced on any of them. I also got an extended 99 year compressor warranty for $99 and the unit came with a full 10 year warranty on every part. I was able to purchase both units for less than the cost of a single Carrier or Trane unit. Thanks J
