Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - 220v air handler motor

Expert: J Cook - 1/20/2009

Question
hello, i have been given a 220v squirrel cage with 5 colored wires coming right out of the motor. i'd like to use it for a ventilation fan in my shop. can you tell me which of the black, red, yellow, orange, and blue wires to use?i have 110,220single phase, switches, contactors, everything but a diagram for wiring...   thanks, mike...

Answer
Mike, unfortunately manufacturers do not use a common color arrangement. You will either need to get the model number of the motor and contact the manufacturer, or take it to a motor shop and they can ohm the windings and tell you which wires are which. Thanks J
