Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Rheem Criterion Gas Furnace

Expert: J Cook - 1/29/2009

Question
Where is the air filter on my Rheem Criterion Gas Furnace and how do I change it?

Answer
Depending on how the contractor installed the duct system, it will either be in the factory portion of the furnace directly adjacent to the return duct connection, and there is usually a small door secured with screws or it just hinges open. The filter will be in a narrow metal track inside. It just slides out so you can see the size required to replace it. Many contractors install a return grille inside the home with the filter in it. Locate the large return grille and open it to see if there is a filter. If so, still open the unit to ensure the one in the unit was removed. I have seen this one left in and never changed and eventually it will damage the unit, this one needs to be removed and not replaced if there is one in the main return grille. Thanks J
