Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Goodman AR32

Expert: Joe - 10/30/2009

Question
I have a Goodman AR32 that was installed 3 years ago. The Coil has failed. Leaks. The system had a 2 ton and I would like to replace the coil and install a 3 ton Heatpump. The data sheets I have found on the Internet shows it could be use in several configurations. I have the coil number for a 2.5 ton. Do I have to change to coil or just the orifice that came with the goodman heatpump.(3 ton)

Answer
Stephen,

Lets see you want to stuff a 2.5 ton coil inside a 2 ton air handler and match  to a 3 ton condensing outdoor unit. Your too small on the indoor coil would need a 3 ton indoor unit. Also who is to say your duct work is rated for 3 tons, you have a 2 ton now. What ever happened to a warranty ?? Goodman has a 10 year product warranty on their units. Unless you bought it via Internet company, then Goodman does not warranty their units but certainly the Company where you bought it from should have given you some sort of warranty. Also Goodman web site recommends you run 7/8" OD interconnecting tubing, for a 3 ton unit, guessing you have either 5/8" or 3/4" .you probably have the liquid line of 3/8 " correct. Not to mention your blower motor/squirrel cage is rated for 2 tons. Big mismatch system your asking for.
