Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - damper assembly installation

Expert: Norval Trimborn - 10/31/2009

Question
I've been told by an HAC guy that my upstairs zone damper assembly needs to be replaced.  The assembly is mounted just inches away the main AC/heating unit. The quote was $617.00 dollars.  The part (a Perfect Temp 14" damper with motor) on line is $128.00 dollars. Can installation really be almost $500.00 dollars?  I live south of Atlanta,Ga.  The AC/heating unit is in the attic, very easily accessible well lighted and a 6' 6" person can stand easily anywhere around the unit.  Thank you for your time.

Barry

Answer
Although the cost may seem high compared to the "internet" price of the part you must realize that the company must order/pickup the part, deliver it to your house with a service technician to install it and will normally warranty it to work correctly for the first year. The HVAC service business has a high overhead(physical plant, office personnel, service vehicles and technicians, repair parts stock etc.) and must still make a profit to stay in business. A fairly handy person may be able to order the part from the internet and install it. But if they did and it didn't work properly what then? The internet supplier may say that you damaged the part while installing it and refuse to warranty it. Having a part installed by a reputable company will normally eliminate all these hassles to the homeowner.
