Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - mold on coils

Expert: Norval Trimborn - 10/29/2009

Question
I just had my furnace cleaned.  My house is only four years old and the service man said and showed my that I had mold over most of the A-coils.  My neighbor down the street had mold in her furnace also and her house was built the same time as mine.  I have never heard of such a thing.  Is the a common occurrence?  The service man cleaned it and said it will be fine from here on.  Can just one cleaning cure the problem?

Answer
Yes, the moist environment by the A coil can promote the growth of mold and bacteria. The use of UV lights by the A coil can help reduce or eliminate the problem in this area, but you should have your house checked by a mold expert to see if the problem in your system is being caused by another source.
