I'm very confused about a problem with my outside AC Unit and would be really grateful to hear your input.
My AC unit is about 10 yrs old... it cools the house pefectly fine. But about 3 weeks ago a problem with it amerged. Every single time it shuts off the AC unit makes a VERY loud gun shot sound (or like a metal door slamming shut... BANG!!!). I already had the problem diagnosed.
It's because the fan in the outside AC unit is stopping abruptly... rather than slowing down as it normally would because the bearings have simply gone bad. So when the AC shuts off the fan just comes to an immediate HAULT. It only does this upon shut off. I'm being told it's about $300-$350 to replace the fan motor.
I cannot afford to throw my money out the window... I feel it's still cooling the house down perfectly fine so why waste money fixing it... so I am wondering is it SAFE to simply leave it be until the fam simply croaks? THEN I can replace the fan motor? Or is it a BAD idea to leave it as is because when it's running like this it can damage my AC Unit compressor for example and end up cosyting me a LOT more money?
I live in FL so the AC turns on and then turns off MANY times a day... every single time it shuts off I hear a siogle VERY loud BANG!!! Should I rpelace the fan motor or take my chnaces you think? I cannot make up my mind....
Thanks very much for any input,
Juliet
Answer Juliet,
It really isn't wasting money to fix it , its just a matter of time before it fails(with in a short period)If the fan blade stops immediate I am really surprised it even runs.If the motor fails when your not there , the unit continues to run and the compressor gets very hot and can do permanent damage . Maybe while it is still running get some other pricing for the repair .
Marcus PS my company is located in Florida if we are local give us a call.
