Question I'm in the process of replacing my 22-year old Lennox split system Central Air Conditioner with gas heater and have received several quotes over the past three weeks. One contractor said he can install a new Carrier unit with a five ton furnace (our house is about 2,400 sf) and a four ton compressor. He said that will qualify for the $1,500 Federal energy tax credit for energy efficient air conditioning units. I'm concerned about his recommendation to install a compressor that is rated different from the furnace. Is this something I should be worried about, in other words, should I be installing both a five ton compressor and a five ton furnace?
Answer Harvey,
The furnaces are rated to accommodate up to a certain tonnage coil.In order to qualify for the rebate there are very specific indoor coil to outdoor coil matching systems. I recently installed a 3 ton outdoor unit and the matching indoor unit was a 4 ton ARI rated number to qualify for the rebate..So it would not be unusual .I would have the contractor show you on the ARI number on the website exactly what he intends to install. Most of the ARI numbers call for a TXV valve ,so make sure he installs one if it's required. Also make sure you have him install a start assist kit (hard start kit ) for the compressor if indeed it calls for the TXV metering type valve.( the model he is installing may have a start assist kit from the factory.) Usually the furnace also has to be a certain model along with the indoor coil and condensing unit to qualify for the rebate.,but not always. Also a good idea is to install a 5 minute time delay ( usually they are incorporated in the t-stat or circuit board.) I would get more than one bid. Look for a contractor to follow the install guide as close as possible ,and charging method for a long troublefree operation. Also get in writing the labor warranty ,the manufactures parts and compressor warranty in writing .They all start when unit is placed into service.
