Question Joe,
I have a two story 2300 sq ft home on a slab in central Indiana. Split Bryant heat pump system. 7 years old. It is 45 degrees tonight... sitting here in my living room, I hear the "whoosh" of the outside unit entering the defrost cycle every 5 minutes. The reverse cycle lasts 1-2 minutes. When the compressor starts sending heat back inside, I feel vibration on the refrigerant line getting stronger and stronger until the heat pump reverses again. I've got the thermostat set at a modest 68... it's maintaining it well. I just hate watching my electric meter spin like a top when those heat packs kick in during the reversal.
To my knowledge, no preventative maintenance has been done on this system (we moved in about a year ago).
Answer Brett,
Should not be initiating a defrost every 5 minutes, on the board of the outside unit The defrost pin should be set at 30 or 45 or 60 or 90 minutes. you can remove access panel and see which one it's set at.So the minimum it should initiate a defrost would be 30 minutes if set at 30 minutes AFTER the defroft thermostat/sensor closes. Guessing you may have a board issue. doubt it's your defrost thermostat/sensor. Certainly I would call a Contractor who is familiar with Heat Pump troubleshooting. You also may try buying the parts yourself and repair it. If you get it right ( the correct parts that caused the problem ) you probably saved yourself a good amount of money. I would goggle " hvac parts " many parts store will sell you a defrost board,at different prices ,so check around,a OEM board will cost more but it would be an exact fit if you buy a generic board that fits many brands it will probably cost less but you may have to move a few pins to fit your model and brand certainly a little more complicated. also get a new defrost thermostat ( which mounts on the outdoor coil copper bend of the outdoor coil.)minimal cost item. guessing you can buy both for under $125.00 Needing only the model/serial number of the outdoor unit. Hopefully your outdoor fan motor is running and your refrigerant charge is correct.
