Question I have central air with "strip heat" in my home. I replaced my old thermostat with a new programmable digital one. The air conditioner ran fine this summer. I tried to turn on the heat recently and it will not run with the fan set on "auto". I here a click when I turn the desired temp above the current reading on the thermostat, the blower does not come on. The unit will however heat with the fan set to the "on" position. What gives?
Answer There is normally either a switch(physical) inside the thermostat or a setup option(programming) to set the fan for either gas(fossil fuel) or electric/heat pump operation. In the gas setting the furnace controls the fan operation in heat to allow for a warmup period. In the electric/heat pump setting the fan will turn on at high speed with the call for heat. Check your thermostat instruction sheet to see how to set the fan for electric/heat pump operation.
