Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Radiant Baseboard Bangs!

Expert: Mike Reavis - 11/5/2009

Question
We have a boiler system that heats our 1 and 1/2 story home. We haven't had any problems with it except the baseboards make loud banging and clicking noises in the two bedrooms upstairs. It's especially worse in the one bedroom that is the farthest from the boiler. The baseboards are original to the house, which is about sixty years old! This noise wakes my 4 yr old daughter up at night! We've bled the baseboard in her room but have not done any others in the house. Also, the previous owners had the system checked every year but we have not had it done since we bought the house 2 1/2 years ago. Would having it checked fix this problem or is there something we could do to fix it without having to call a technician? Thank you for any help you can give!

Answer
If you make your hot water for your taps from the boiler that you heat the house with you will have this problem.  If you always have plenty of hot water, you can see if the technician can lower the stand-by temperature, and this will minimize this noise.

If you don't maintain boiler temperature for domestic hot water production, then you should see if the addition of an outdoor reset system might help you.  The Honeywell AQ 2000 panel is a fine example of a brand of outdoor reset control.  It will help to maintain a more constant temperature in the baseboards.

The other problem you might have is that the boiler may be large, you have multiple zones controlled by thermostats, and these zones are "small" with reference to their heat output.  Some people have a contractor install a buffer tank to service the zones, or they install a smaller boiler (modulating if possible)

Finally, the banging may be caused by your air-filled expansion tank being water-logged, or a bladder-type tank is incorrectly sized, has insufficient pressure, or has a failed bladder.  These service problems usually require the services of a contractor.

With Regards,

Mike
