Question I have a White-Rodgers 2 stage heat pump/AC thermostat (#0745T)
(cannot set temperature to be comfortable - too cold or too hot, with minimal movement of temperature adjustment control)
There are only 4 wires connected in the t-stat
(A/C, Heat, Fan, Common?).
What thermostat characteristics should I be looking at
to replace the existing one (does it need to say heat pump?)?
(I would like at least digital, possibly programmable - don't need weekends).
What Honeywell thermostats would work?
Answer Yes you would need a heat pump capable thermostat. With only 4 wires to the t-stat you are not running a 2 stage heat pump. The wires to the t-stat should go to R,Y,G and either B or O(depending on whether the reversing valve is powered for heat or cooling). If the terminals are not clearly marked on the old t-stat you may need a service technician to wire in a new stat. The new digital stats must be programmed in the setup to power either B or O.
