Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Trane XR90 Will not turn on.

Expert: Howard Livingston - 11/7/2009

Question
I recently installed a programable thermostat for my Trane XR90 furnace. Once it was installed, I attempted to run the unit and it wouldn't turn on. I re-installed the original Honeywell non-programable thermostat that was working properly prior to removing it and the XR90 still will not turn on.

The indicator light is not flashing which tells me to check the power. If I open the cover to the furnace and depress the override button (I think that is what it is) I hear the transformer humming but nothing happens. The unit will not light and I can't get the fan motor to turn even in the on setting on the thermostat. Any ideas what this might be?

Thanks,

Mike

Answer
And here you thought you were improving the tstat, huh  ??  It happens, Michael.
You need to test for 24v power first. Can do at the tstat or anywhere. The power to the furnace too. If you have both, Jump the red/green wires at the tstat for the blower motor. If need to keep going, manually press in the contactor on the outside unit. That indicates whether its a power supply problem outside or a control circuit problem.  Need more help ?? Do a follow up.
