Question
I HAVE AN 80% package unit that when turned to heat combustion air motor comes on pressure switch closes, purges then ignites for ten seconds then goes out control board led says flame not established. I've replaced control board, ignitor wire, flame sensor wire, ignitor and flame sensor, checked all limits even all  wires to board.Flame sensor is in flame and burners are burning correctly. As soon as ignitor stops gas valve opens and starts cycle over. According to serial # it's a 96 model (080496....)  any ideas on what to do or check next? thanks for your time, Lisa.

Answer
Lisa,

The only thing I can think of is possible your gas pressure is not correct. 3.5" for natural and 11" for propane ,maybe the burner flame is so strong it's moving the flame off the flame sensor. Maybe your gas valve is sensitive to gas pressure flucuation. To me it's something when the main gas comes on,you may want to go to the gas valve main and check that you have 24 volts and see if it drops out after 10 sec. if it does then it's not your valve. if you have 24 volts at the main gas valve and the gas shuts off then your gas valve would be bad.If you use a pilot system your pilot orifice may be partially plugged and your not getting a good strong flame on the flame sensor, when the main burners light the pilot flame moves away from the sensor. The orifice is quite small on the pilot, would need to remove and blow out with air.You can also replace your existing gas valve ,ignitor, and flame sensor with a Robertshaw or Honeywell from grainger.com page 3831 catalog #400 and be done with it,called "Intermittent pilot gas ignition system " If you are positive that your board is good and all safty controls are good.

In closing I would verify the pressure at the valve also checking to make sure when mian flame lights ,verify that the pilot is strong and correct size, or whatever flame is on the flame sensor is still engulfed and did not move causing the sensor to shut down the unit.
