Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - compressor terminals

Expert: Marcus - Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Expert - 11/8/2009

Question
Hey, recently I tried to run a compressor, but I found that some wires were burned, and the terminals too.

I ohmed the compressor but it gave me incorrect readings, is there anything else that I could do?

How can I directly connect the compressor? I mean, directly to line voltage to check the compressor itself, bypassing the controls? I just wanna be sure the compressor passed away, before replacing it.

And which could be the reasons for the compressor to fail?

Thanks for your help in advance...

Answer
Argelio,
Make sure that you do have the correct voltage at the compressor . You really don't need to bypass any controls , just manual press in the contactor . I would check to make sure the compressor is not shorted to ground before doing this. There are many reasons for compressor failure , poor wiring connections , low voltage , acid in system. Good luck
