Question wife and i purchased a new rhemm central heating and air system back in febuary of this year(2009), problem is that we used what i've learned is called a "roage" technician to install the system, the sytem has never ran more than 3 hours at a time and that was only twice. we could'nt find the guy afterwards, so we called a contractor, who worked on the system for 2 months off and on until he got tired of it. the system is contaminated with what appears to be a mixture of water and oil. question; can the heat pump be cleaned out(decontaminated)?...all other components have been changed out, only one left.
Answer Wow, Glenn, that is a terrible mmess !! How did that water get in the system ?? A teaspoon will tear up the freon. Think it can be cleaned but ya really don't know until it is done. First the filters in the lines need to be replaced. If there is a filter inside the outside unit it can be removed but no replaced. With that all the freon is discarded. Install liquid & suction filters as big as possible. Then put a vacuum on the system for several hours. Then purge the system thoroughly with R-11. Then vacuum more. Then purged the system to a positive pressure & vacuum again 3 to 4 times. Now fill the system with freon. After a run test for, say 20 min., test the freon with a test set for contaminants. If some are shown, replace the freon & vacuum again, Then retry. Then a final run test to see if it worked. A heck of a mess but doing this is about all you can do. Good luck.
