Question
I our unit is 6MO. old We notices that when the unit goes into defrost mode the outside fan still runs. I know it's should stop.We installed the unit our self,it worked fine through the summer in air conditioning .The weather here has just gotten cold enough for it to defrost often, thats when we noticed the problem. The new white-rodgers 1f79 thermostat quit .I had a janitrol hpt 18-60 t-stat I put on it.I don't know if the t-stat may be the problem or something else. We are retired and on A fixed income, thats the reason we haven't called repair man THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP

Answer
The thermostat will have no control over the outdoor fan in defrost mode. This is strictly controlled by the circuit board in the outdoor unit and unless there is some incorrect factory wiring, the board has failed. It will be under warranty. I would write down exactly how the wires are attached, remove the board and go to a distributor or contractor who handles this unit, explain the fan is not cutting off in defrost mode and they will give you a new one. Be sure to have the model and serial number of the unit. Thanks J
