Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Split Air Conditioner Troubleshooting FAQ

Question
I live in Florida. Our 15yr old unit is blowing warm air. The coils are not frozen but the condenser outside is not functioning (fan or compressor). Checked the fuse box but nothing is tripped.
Another consideration is should I repair or replace? If you advise replacement, I would appreciate your opinion on what to be on the lookout for (installers, favorite manufactor of units, SEER, BTU, fair pricing, etc.).
Some background info: The home is 1,700 sq ft under air. We are considering increasing this, though, by changing our garage into a den under air. Thanks in advance.

Answer
You may still have some life in this unit, but it is borderline on life. I just replaced my aging Carrier units with Goodman. They are about 1/2 the cost of a Carrier or Trane, it has a full 10 year warranty on everything and for $99, I got a 99 year extended compressor warranty. You will need to consult with a professional HVAC contractor to do a load calculation adding the den to ensure the correct size unit is installed. Thanks J
