Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - furnace fan works, but no heat, any ideas?

Expert: J Cook - 4/3/2009

Question
Dear Mr. Cook.
We have a furnace that isn't giving us heat anymore. When
the temperature dips below our thermostat setting, the fan
kicks in, and right when you would normally hear the tell-
tale "WOOF" of the heat igniting and blowing, there's
nothing. The fan eventually turns off. (Maybe out of
depression? :-)
We HAD had a similar problem where the fan would turn on,
the ignition would click on but then the furnace would
stop. That turned out to be a circuit board issue and that
was easily fixed thanks to a very friendly and local HVAC
tech. This time, the difference is that there is no
ignition. All fan, no heat.
I'm afraid I can't recall what brand furnace we have. Our
thermostat is an electronic Honeywell model (cheaper, older
small display screen model).
Any idea what might be going on? Any advice you can offer
would be greatly and sincerely appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
Try turning the power off to the furnace, wait a few minutes and turn it back on and see if it works. Sometimes the control circuit must be reset much like rebooting a computer. If it works for one or more cycles then quits again, do not continue to reset it as there is a safety cutting the unit off and turning the power off and back on resets the safety circuit and will eventually damage the unit. Thanks  J
