Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Distance to outside AC unit a problem?

Expert: J Cook - 5/31/2009

Question
We are trying to reduce our energy usage and lower the electric bill.  We live in a town home community with outdoor ac units centrally placed on the property.  Our home is located approximately five homes away from the units.  Does a far distance between the indoor and outdoor ac units result in higher electric usage?  If so, would it be beneficial to move the outdoor unit closer to the home?

Answer
If this is a typical a/c unit with refrigerant lines interconnecting the two unit devices, I do not see how it works at all. Some units are cold water units fed to the air handler in the home, and in this case it is typical, but if this is a standard a/c unit, this installation is insane. I would contact the local government inspector and ask how this installation passed inspection. Thanks  J
