I bought my house last summer. It was built in 1995 and is about 1550 sq. ft. In the master bedroom, there is a large bay window, approx. 8’ X 8’. That room is the hottest in the house. It’s absurd. There is a new TRANE a/c unit. I’ve been up in the attic. It’s quiet and there doesn’t appear to be any leaks. We have a ceiling fan in there, blowing the cool air down, and a floor fan. Door stays open with a gap at the bottom of the door whenever it’s closed.
I had Solar Control come out and coat the window with 3m window tint. The film is Prestige, which is supposed to be the best as far as cutting down on heat and glare. I got the darkest tint available. Still hot. They came back out and double coated it. Still hot.
We have folding plastic vertical hanging blinds on the window. The blinds stay closed.
I think that room would still be hot even if the window wasn’t there at all.
I would love to put in a window unit but the bay window is all we have in that room, which is on the front of the house. I don’t think it’s an option.
What can I do? Help!
Answer It's a shame the duct systems are installed so badly.Air distrubition is so important. It adds to the life of the equipment soooo much. Try this. Throttle the supply grilles in the least used rooms. Not all the way but almost. That will move more air into the master bedroom.Are the supply grilles aiming the air towards the big window, or outside walls. Tou can throttle the air supply a bit more in other rooms close to the bedroom. Now, if you have flex ducts, insure they are as sraight as possibe. Even cut off surplus & reinstall if necessary. No tight bends closing the ducts either.Also. insure the blower is running on high speed, the black wire.Thats it other than repairing the duct system.
