Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - safety switch

Expert: J Cook - 5/17/2009

Question
how do i install a safety switch for air handler drain pan? It is a model j-100 with a styrofoam floating device. it also has to yellow wires. not for sure if unit is 110v or 220. thanks for your time

Answer
This switch connects in the control circuit, 24 volts. Open the fan section and locate the thermostat terminal board. There will be a Y terminal. This energizes the compressor. Remove the wire from the Y terminal, extend it to one of the drain pan switch wire, connect another wire to the other switch wire and connect it back to the Y terminal. This way if the pan fills, the compressor will be shut down preventing any more condensation from forming until the drain pan is cleaned. Thanks J
