Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Frost-free freezer has frozen water droplets and making loud buzzing noise

Expert: Eric Campion - 6/30/2009

Question
QUESTION: I'm leasing a home that has a GE Profile Arctica fridge/top freezer (and the home is a friend's so I don't mind doing the legwork to diagnose the problem).  I noticed a few weeks ago, there were drops of water that had frozen off on the top of the inside of the freezer on the vent covers.  My landlord told me that GE had already replaced the motherboard because of the known issues with it.  When I Google the problem, many suggested that it was from having the freezer open for too long and/or high humidity getting in.  I defrosted the freezer by using jumper wires on the MB, wiped everything down and within a week, they were back.  Now today, I noticed a loud, deep buzzing noise that only goes away when I put the freezer down to 0 or unplug it.  When I turn it back up or plug it back in, it's quiet for a couple minutes, but then starts again and doesn't stop.  It's coming from the upper back in the middle of the freezer.
The model number is PST22LBMARBB.  I usually do a lot of appliance repair myself and this one is annoying me because I JUST went shopping this afternoon (noise started this morning) and I'm afraid of losing all my food.  Its still staying cold and you can see the cold air coming out the vent when you open the door.  I'll be taking the back off to see if the fan is frozen or not running at all, but I just wanted to get a more professional opinion before I get overly aggravated.  I have a backup fridge to use in the meantime (IF ours still works).

ANSWER: The model number you have submitted to us is incomplete or not correct for your unit.  In order for us to provide you accurate information and supply you with the correct manufactures part numbers , we will need the complete model number, serial number and batch or series numbers (if applicable) found on a business card size metal/foil plate.  If you are having difficulty locating this identification label, follow this link which will take you to our Website where we have pictures of common locations where your model number ID label can be found.  Here is the link:  http://www.affordableappliance.com/Tips/modelnumbers.htm   Once you have the updated information, please reply to this email.  Eric Campion

QUESTION: Sorry, is PTS22LBMARBB for the model and GA301566 for the serial.  A little update though.  I took the cover for the light and fan off and the fan was running fine.  When I took of the rear wall, I noticed that the coils had about a 1/4" of frost on them and there looked like a frozen waterfall on the left side (facing the fridge) of the freezer.  Once I blew it with a hairdryer, wiped it all down and turned it back on, nothing else happened so far.  So now...I'm not sure which part is causing the problem if there is one.

Answer
So...at this point, is your unit cooling?  Aside from the buzzing, I am not sure what your problem really is.  can you isolate the area of the buzzing.  Please enlighten me without confusion....

Waiting to hear from you,
Eric Campion
