Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Signater 2000 air conditioner?

Expert: Eric Campion - 6/25/2009

Question
Me friend recently let me try out a window air conditioner
she had used a few years back. All I can tell as far as the
name is "Signature 2000" on the front controls. Every thirty
seconds to a minute it makes a very loud noise. I noticed
the noise it was making was very similar to the noise my
neighbors air conditioner made, except his air conditioner
makes a quieter, sustained noise. It seems to be more
effective if I change the outlet, but I'm not sure why, and
the air coming out of it while it's making the noise in
short bursts is fast, but less cool, and when it's
continuous it's cooler, but not as fast no matter what the
setting. I'm not sure if there's anything I personally can
do to make the air conditioner work better or if I should
just toss it and look elsewhere.

Answer
After rereading your question several times, I think you are hearing a compressor turn on and turn off, when it is off, the air is not cool.  What voltage is the air conditioner and are you running it on an extension cord, if you are running it on an extension cord, STOP that is a problem, try running it directly from an outlet.  I will wait to hear your thoughts.  Ann
