Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Whirlpool Ice Maker

Expert: Eric Campion - 6/9/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a Whirlpool Refrigerator, Model #ET1LFKXKQ (4/8/03) and a Whirlpool Icemaker (Model #ECKMF94) that is the second one since 4/03 that we have had installed that is freezing up in the tube at times that we have to go in and remove the ice to get it to work again. Is there a reason it does this and what, if anything, can we do to avoid this? Our old one did the same thing. This one was installed 9/3/08 and recently started to do the same thing. We thought we were over that by installing a new icemaker. Guess not :( Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Could be the water inlet valve dripping much like a leaky faucet.  Drip...Freeze...Drip...Freeze...Drip...Freeze...Drip...Freeze...Drip...Freeze.......Until finally the entire tube is froze shut.  Check this and let me know what you think.....

Waiting to hear from you,
Eric Campion

QUESTION: We are guessing that this might be the problem. There seems to be little ice crystals that start forming in the tube. Over time, would this be building up to totally clog the tube?

Answer
I do not think I would be giving a bad rating to someone who is trying to help you most likely 100's of miles away.  To keep me here and gain all of my 31 years of experience, I think I would hold off rating.  I am not god here....I can't even see your unit, I do not know temperatures, conditions of door gaskets, know whether or not air is leaking through the ice door chute.....If I were there, I'd be in and out within 1/2 hour.  This is a free volunteer service.  Appreciate the people trying to help you....

This could be the problem.  Try lowering the temp in the freezer one notch on the dial and see if this helps before racking your brains out.  Things like this can get frustrating as it is not an immediate repair but one you have to monitor.
