Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Whole House Fan

Expert: Eric Campion - 6/25/2009

Question
So I live in a three bedroom with two other roommates. I live in the basement which is nice and cool in the summer and not to bad in the winter. My problem lies in the fact that I can't seem to keep the air circulated down stair. It tends to carry a musky smell. Our basement has no working windows and tends to be damp at times. I have found a solution for my problem by leaving the whole house fan on but my roommates are worried that by running the fan all the time our electric bill will go through the roof. Eric I was just wondering what your solution to this would be and do you know if running that fan will raise the cost of our electricity exuberantly. Thanks for you expertise!!!

Answer
The dampness is a problem.   A dehumidifier would take the moisture out of the air.  Of course when you are running an appliance on electricity, it will up the bill.  Why don't you compare the bill while using it to not using it and then you can see the difference.  No one is able to tell you the amount used because there are many variables that affect costs.  Or put a small fan at the bottom of the stairs to pull the air out and upstairs.  There are some thoughts for you.  Good luck with the roommates.  Be careful, black mold can be dangerous and any type of mold or mildew can make you sick.  I think I would deal with that moisture first.  Ann
