Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Air Conditioner's Compressor Locked

Expert: Craig HVAC Expert - 7/5/2009

Question
I have an XP15 HeatPump that is just two years old. The AC outdoor started to have all kind of problems since early April (2009) and there had been 8 (eight) technicians dispatched but the problem has not been found or resolved.

The AC runs until it gets to the desired temperature set by the thermostat in the house and shuts down. When it needs to start again, it just blowing normal, warm air, instead of cool air.

Today, another technician came out and he found the compressor was locked, couldn't start. He had to replace the capacitor and added some kind of "booster" to force the compressor to start.

What can be the problem and how can it take so long for the dealer to get the problem figured out? Should I call the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint of file a complaint with the District Attorney? Or should I call the Lennox headquarters and see what they can do? We have been having AC problems since April, that's three months. It is rediculous.

Thanks

Answer
The hard start kit installed, should take care of the problem.  The problem you are having is normal.  It can also be a sign of a compressor failure, but that is really hard to determine until it does.  Not all problems are easy to find, and not all can be found at the moment of service.  That is not to say I would not have added the hard start kit the first time.   If you are using the same company, it might be wise to change companies in hope that the skill level will be better, if the problem was not found due to the skill level of the employees. I can not tell you what to do with the BBB.  I do not know how much money you have in this, and if what they were doing was to the best of their ability.
