Question
Hi,

Trying to help out my elderly father down in Fla.  He is asking me about getting a service contract for his Air Conditioner.  I guess he has had several solicitations.  He did tell me the unit is at least 15 years old.  What kind of contract or what should be in a service contract, especially since the unit is as old as it is.

Thanks.

Answer
Most companies these days do not write full coverage service contracts(covering cleanings and parts and labor for repairs needed).Contracts normally include cleanings at a reduced rate and parts and labor needed for repairs at a reduced rate. The cleanings are something that should be done every year, but the quality of the cleanings will vary greatly from company to company. One way to tell is the amount of time a technician takes to do a cleaning (depending on the equipment, at least 1/2 hr. to an hour or more). The hope of the company is that through regular use of them, you will chose them when it is time to replace your equipment. The most important thing to you is that you find a company that does conscientious/quality work  and that you feel comfortable with them. It may take some time to find the right company. Ask friends and family for recommendations for companies that they are happy with.
