Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Blower motor won't come on sometimes

Expert: Craig HVAC Expert - 7/8/2009

Question
I have a Amana Air Command heat pump that is 20 years old. When fan on thermostat is set to auto the blower motor usually will come on normally one or two times and then won't come on. If I shut the breaker off and turn it back on sometimes that solves the problem for another one or two times. In the last six months I have replaced the blower motor, capacitor, sequencer relay (twice#, and today I replaced the thermostat. Same problem. I am reading 35 vac at the thermostat. No problem at all with the compressor #outdoor) unit. Have sat in the hot attic and when blower doesn't work there is no 'click' from the relay. This is driving me nuts and killing my electric bill!

Answer
The 35 VAC is on the high side.  The voltage is rated at 24, and I do not like to see anything over 26-28 or under 22.  You need to make sure the transformer is connected correctly. Some transformers have multi taps to allow for a difference in incoming voltage. The other thing that needs to happen is to determine if the motor is getting the proper voltage.  If the motor is getting voltage, then the motor or run cap is suspect.  Otherwise, the problem is in the controls.
